Accessing your iPhone filesystem directly with a command line console can be convenient and makes it possible to run utilities such as Opens Sh without the need to buy separate standalone clients. The Mobile Terminal app has been around for some time and provides this functionality to jail broken iPhone users. Unfortunately, the latest version of Mobile Terminal available in Cyndia crashes in OS 4 and OS 5.


The app is still available and easy to install, without having to manually decompress archives or copy files directly to your iPhone. The easy way to install Mobile Terminal in OS 4 or OS 5 doesn't even require a computer. Follow these steps directly on your jail broken iPhone to install a working copy of Mobile Terminal:

Since Apple sets all OS devices to "alpine", If you decide to enable SSH it is important for security reasons to change the password to something unique.
